A cat of nine tails is a whip with nine knotted lashes. On board ships, the whip was kept in a bag, and the 'cat was let out of the bag' for a flogging as a type of punishment for breaking ship rules. Made of braided leather, it comes equipped with a built in leather loop for hanging of a belt or hook and averages about 21 inches long.
